Each hour passed is marked by a single feather lifting or rising from the bed, where it remains raised for the hour’s duration. About Time is a simulated gesture of life as each feather lifts, where time is animated and imprecise against a background of feathers that further blurs time. This is a combination of Western and Eastern notions of time – the familiar clock face refers to linear time we know so well in the West, and the cyclical perception of ambiguous time in the East. Using bird feathers as material and image is a nod to the cuckoo clock, a Swiss (or German) cultural icon whose mechanism and traditional aesthetics has remained nearly unchanged since the 1800s until recently.
